You can sign up for a free account and create a web page by simply choosing a template and then making changes to text and pictures. There are instructions on the website, so I won't repeat them here. Have a look, it's fun.
If you pay them some money, you can get your own web address (domain name) and get rid of their advertising, but for our purposes, the free version is just fine.
Wordpress is a page builder and manager that very powerful and flexible. There are many plugins and addons that allow you to make any type of site you need and there are tons of great themes for it. Its not so much about building a site from scratch but finding a theme that suits your needs, then adapting it to your designs. You don't need to code much with wordpress, you can, but you can also avoid it. I use dreamweaver when I do any code editing just for its code editor.
